Mohammed Shami Joins Bengal Team For SMAT Knockouts Amid Fitness Uncertainty
Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is waiting for fitness approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to make his international comeback. Meanwhile, he remains with the Bengal team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).
Despite his strong performances in SMAT, the BCCI is cautious about allowing him to join the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series in Australia. Concerns focus on his ability to handle the physical demands of Test cricket.

Shami has taken eight wickets in seven matches for Bengal in SMAT after recovering from a year-long injury. His form and skill are evident, but BCCI's Sports Science wing is more concerned about his endurance during Test matches.
The National Cricket Academy (NCA) has not yet provided a final report on Shami's readiness, causing uncertainty about his availability for the remaining Tests of the BGT series.
Reports indicate that Shami might not travel to Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Currently, he is with the Bengal team in Bengaluru for SMAT knockouts. Bengal played their group-stage matches in Rajkot and will face Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal on December 9.
A source close to CAB mentioned that Shami traveled with the team to Bengaluru on Friday. He took three wickets against Rajasthan in Bengal's last group-stage match and is expected to play in the knockouts unless major issues arise.
Team Practice and Workload Management
The source also stated that Shami's participation in Saturday's practice depends on coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla's assessment. The coach might rest him to manage his workload effectively.
The domestic T20 tournament has been crucial for Shami, and at 34, he may need to continue focusing on this format for now.
Shami's future participation hinges on fitness clearance, which remains pending. His return to international cricket depends on meeting BCCI's rigorous fitness standards.
