Mohammed Shami Returns To Competitive Cricket: Will He Join India's Squad For Australia Tour?
Mohammed Shami, a senior Indian fast bowler, has returned to competitive cricket after nearly a year. He played for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group match against Madhya Pradesh this week. This marks his comeback since missing action due to an injury that required surgery following the ODI World Cup 2023.
Shami's absence was felt by both Team India and Gujarat Titans over the past months. His return is expected to significantly boost the Indian cricket team as they prepare for upcoming challenges. The pacer's fitness will be crucial as India gears up to face Australia in a five-match Test series.

The series against Australia will influence the World Test Championship (WTC) Final standings. A potential reunion with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj could strengthen India's bowling attack. However, Shami's inclusion in the squad is not yet confirmed despite his promising performance in the Ranji Trophy.
In the first innings for Bengal, Shami bowled 19 overs and took four wickets for 54 runs. This performance was a step towards meeting one of BCCI's conditions for joining the Indian squad Down Under. Reports suggest he needed to replicate this in the second innings to be considered further.
The national selection committee is monitoring how Shami's body responds during these matches. They are particularly concerned about any swelling or pain after his efforts on the field. If he meets all criteria, he might join Bumrah before the second Test in Adelaide.
Shami bowled over 20 overs in Indore's Holkar Stadium during the second innings, fulfilling one of BCCI's requirements. However, he still needs to pass a fitness test and receive clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before being eligible for selection.
A BCCI source mentioned, "But the biggest test would be whether he again feels any pain after four days. If the NCA medical team green-lights his fitness, obviously he will join before the second Test." This highlights that Shami's fitness remains under scrutiny.
The decision regarding Shami's inclusion may only occur after feedback from Ajay Ratra of the selection committee and Nitin Patel, head of NCA Medical Team, is reviewed by chief selectors and coaches. This evaluation will likely happen post-Ranji match on November 16.
If all goes well, Shami could potentially join before India's Brisbane Test according to his childhood coach's statement to Indian Express. His addition would bolster India's pace attack significantly as they face Australia Down Under.
