Mohammed Shami's Impressive Return Raises Hopes For Inclusion In India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy Squad

Mohammed Shami has made a notable comeback to competitive cricket after nearly a year. His return could pave the way for his inclusion in Team India during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Shami had been sidelined since last year's ODI World Cup due to an injury but marked his return by taking four wickets in Bengal's Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh.

Shami expressed his excitement on social media, stating, "Finally, the wait is over! After 360 days, I'm back on the field, stronger, and hungrier. 4 wickets for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and this is just the start. Every delivery, and every wicket is dedicated to You, my incredible fans. Your love fuels my passion. Let's make this season unforgettable!"

Shami's Return Sparks Hope for India Squad

With his return to domestic cricket, Shami aims for a comeback to the Indian team ahead of major tournaments like the ICC Champions Trophy and the Indian Premier League in 2025. His potential inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad would be significant for India as they face Australia with a relatively inexperienced bowling lineup.

The current pace attack includes Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep. Shami's impressive record in Australia—31 wickets in eight Tests at an average of 32.16—makes him a strong candidate if he proves his fitness.

Although not initially selected for the tour Down Under, Shami's presence would greatly benefit Team India. His partnership with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj could challenge Australia's batting lineup effectively. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting remarked that Shami's absence would be a 'huge loss' for India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22 in Perth.

Ponting praised Shami's performance over recent years, saying, "Shami's been one of the leading fast bowlers in the world for the last few years, and mainly with the red ball. His ODI record's been very good, but what he's been able to do home and away with the red ball in Test cricket has been quite phenomenal."

Hopeful Signs from Coach Badruddin

While official confirmation of Shami's return to the Indian team is pending, his childhood coach Mohammed Badruddin remains optimistic about his inclusion from the Brisbane Test onwards. Badruddin stated that Shami will join after proving his fitness and picking up wickets, making him crucial for India's campaign during the latter part of their tour.

"He will be joining the Indian team after the Adelaide (second) Test," Badruddin mentioned. "Now that he is back, proved his fitness, picked up wickets, he will be crucial for the team in the second half of the tour," he added.
