Mohammed Shami Set To Rejoin India Squad For Final Tests Against Australia After Weight Loss
Reports suggest that India might soon see Mohammed Shami leading their bowling attack with the red ball in Australia. The pacer, currently part of the Bengal team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, is expected to travel to Australia shortly.
Shami has been playing domestic cricket actively. He participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and a Ranji Trophy match, bowling 43 overs. Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla mentioned, "Shami himself wanted to play a fair amount of domestic cricket and inform NCA how his body reacts."

The fast bowler is likely to rejoin India's national squad for the final two Tests against Australia. His kit has already been dispatched to Australia, and fitness clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) seems like a mere formality now.
Although joining for the third Test in Brisbane might be premature, Shami is expected to play in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground starting December 26. His return marks a significant comeback after recovering from ankle surgery and knee swelling.
Shami's last appearance for India was during the World Cup 2023 final. The 34-year-old has worked hard on his fitness, losing six kilograms in weight. "He has already shed around six kilograms of body weight," said Shukla to PTI.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri highlighted Shami's crucial role in India's bowling lineup. The veteran pacer could play a key role if he features in the last two matches of the series.
Despite facing setbacks due to injuries, Shami's determination may finally see him boarding a flight to Australia. His potential return couldn't be more timely for India's Test side.
MyKhel reported that Shami traveled with Bengal for SMAT Knockouts and will play against Chandigarh on Monday. However, he might be called up for national duties afterward.
Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla noted, "He has played seven T20 games in 13 days. If he plays the pre-quarterfinal, it will be eight games in 16 days."
This journey reflects his dedication and commitment to regaining peak fitness levels. His efforts have not gone unnoticed as he prepares for a possible return to international cricket.
