Mohammed Shami's Injury Scare Raises Fitness Concerns For India Comeback In Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Mohammed Shami, the experienced fast bowler, faced an injury scare during Bengal's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh on November 29. The game took place at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Saurashtra.

While trying to stop the ball in the second-last over, Shami clutched his lower back in pain. Sportstar reported that Nitin Patel, head of the Centre of Excellence's medical panel, provided immediate on-field assistance.

Shami's Injury Raises Doubts for India Return

Despite the injury scare, Shami continued to bowl and finished his over. However, Bengal lost the match by six wickets. This incident has reignited concerns about Shami's fitness as he is being considered for a return to India's squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

Shami recently returned from a year-long break due to an ankle injury and foot surgery. He has been working hard to regain his form since then.

In his comeback, Shami delivered an impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy, taking seven wickets in an elite Group C match against Madhya Pradesh. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he had mixed results, including a brilliant 3/21 against Hyderabad but struggled in other matches.

Against Madhya Pradesh, he conceded 38 runs without taking a wicket. This inconsistency has raised questions about his readiness for international cricket.

Uncertain Test Squad Return

The injury scare has cast doubt on Shami's potential return to the Test squad. Discussions are ongoing about his inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Reports suggest that BCCI has given Shami an ultimatum to regain fitness and lose weight if he wants to rejoin India's team.

Madhya Pradesh secured their win over Bengal thanks to Rajat Patidar's aggressive 68 off 40 balls and Subhransu Senapati's 50 off 33 balls. Their partnership helped MP chase Bengal's target of 189 runs with two balls remaining, keeping their unbeaten record intact in Group A.

This situation highlights the challenges Shami faces as he aims for a comeback while balancing fitness concerns and performance expectations.
