Mitchell Marsh Expected To Bolster Australia With Bowling Return In T20 World Cup 2024
Australia's cricket team head coach, Andrew McDonald, has announced that skipper Mitchell Marsh is expected to resume bowling soon. Marsh has been sidelined from bowling since sustaining a hamstring injury during the IPL 2024.
Marsh, who played for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, missed most of the T20 tournament due to his injury. Despite this, he was selected as the captain for Australia's T20 World Cup squad. So far, Marsh has only played as a batter in the tournament and warm-up matches.

Australia, the 2021 champions, have managed without an additional bowler in their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The current bowling unit has been effective, securing victories against Oman and England. They restricted England to 165/6 while defending a total of 201 and held Oman to 125/9 while defending 164.
McDonald expressed optimism about Marsh's return to bowling in upcoming matches. "Very hopeful that he will be back ready to bowl in matches. I'd say the likelihood of that against Namibia is very slim, potentially increasing into Scotland and then I think you should have a clear run at the Super 8s and be able to bowl there," McDonald stated during a pre-match press conference.
"The assumption there is that we qualify and as I said, Namibia first thing and then we can start to work out what it looks like for the Super 8s and beyond," he added.
In his T20I career, Marsh has taken 17 wickets in 25 innings with an economy rate of 7.74. Overall, he has claimed 85 wickets in 109 T20 innings at an economy rate of 8.44.
McDonald also highlighted the strength of Australia's bowling unit, praising Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, and Marcus Stoinis for their performances against England. "I think over time our bowling has been a strength. I think the way they operate together, they know each other's games, they are really clear on the planning going in," he said.
"I thought Josh Hazelwood bowling a difficult end always stands up. Pat Cummins, his evolution as a T20 player, the more games that he plays is really impressive and Adam Zampa, arguably one of our best white-ball bowlers ever across ODI cricket and T20 cricket," McDonald continued.
"Shows up when we need him to with key breakthroughs, so impressive. So yeah, we feel as though we have got options, which is the nice thing. And Marcus Stoinis, I thought was very impressive," he concluded.
