Mitchell Johnson Discusses Virat Kohli's Standout Competitive Nature In Cricket Rivalry

Mitchell Johnson, the former Australian fast bowler, recently shared insights into his rivalry with Virat Kohli and how Kohli transformed Indian cricket. Johnson highlighted Kohli's unique aggressive nature as a key trait before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

"When Virat Kohli first came on the scene, I remember hearing about him before I saw him. Many were saying he was the next Sachin Tendulkar, even though we all knew Sachin could never be replaced," Johnson remarked. He noted that Kohli's readiness for a challenge set him apart early in his career.

Kohli's Competitive Spirit in Cricket Highlighted

Johnson observed that Kohli's approach was unlike any seen before from Indian players. His aggressive style mirrored what Australians were accustomed to giving but not receiving. This combative spirit became integral to Kohli's game, marking a shift in Indian cricket's demeanor.

"That kind of aggressive attitude was something we had rarely seen from an Indian player at that point. We were used to giving it but didn't always get it back in return. While the occasional player from India may have been combative in moments, Kohli really made it a part of his game," Johnson added.

Johnson also mentioned how Kohli inspired his teammates during the latter stages of legends like Tendulkar and Sehwag's careers. Kohli pushed them to train harder, especially in fielding drills, reflecting his match-day intensity.

"I remember hearing at the back end of Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag's careers, a young Kohli would push his teammates to go harder at training, particularly with fielding drills," said Mitchell.

The 2014-15 Australian Tour

During India's 2014-15 tour of Australia, Johnson noticed a change in the Indian team under Kohli’s leadership. Although Australia won 2-0 in four Tests, this series marked Australia's last victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

"They were competitive and confident they could beat us at home and while they did not do it that summer, won 2-0 by Australia over four Tests, that was the last time the Aussies have won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy," he said.

A Personal Rivalry

Johnson reflected on his personal rivalry with Kohli, which was both frustrating and enjoyable. Their encounters on the field were intense as both players shared a similar competitive spirit.

"I had a well-publicised personal rivalry with Kohli. We had many interactions on the field and I enjoyed it. While I did not know him off the field, on the field we probably played the game in a similar way - taking the game on and not backing down," Johnson stated.

The Boxing Day Test Incident

The rivalry between Johnson and Kohli intensified during the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne in 2014 when Johnson hit Kohli while attempting a run-out. This incident sparked their ongoing confrontations aimed at unsettling each other.

"In that Test match at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) we got him off guard early and had him playing at a ball he did not need to in frustration and unfortunately we dropped him on not many. He then focussed and harnessed his energy and piled on the runs - all 169 of them," he added.

Kohli’s influence has left a lasting mark on Indian cricket by instilling confidence and competitiveness among players. His approach has shaped future generations to thrive under challenging conditions while maintaining team unity.
