Meg Lanning Reveals Exercise Obsession And Diet Led To Retirement
Former Australia cricket captain Meg Lanning has shared a candid insight into the personal challenges that led to her stepping down from international cricket. In a revealing discussion on the Howie Games podcast, Lanning detailed how an obsession with exercise and insufficient nutrition were key factors in her decision to retire unexpectedly late last year. Despite leading Australia through one of its most successful periods in the sport, Lanning missed the Ashes series last year due to medical reasons before announcing her retirement in November.
Lanning's health issues were not immediately apparent to many. She described a rigorous routine of running up to 90 kilometres a week while consuming only two small meals daily, which resulted in her weight dropping from 64kg to 57kg. "I was over-exercising and under-fuelling," Lanning admitted, highlighting that what started as an unintentional habit gradually became a conscious choice due to the perceived benefits she experienced, including not sustaining injuries as expected.

The intensity of her regimen and dietary habits eventually took a toll, making it impossible for her to maintain the mental and physical commitment needed for international cricket. Despite her struggles not being officially diagnosed as an eating disorder, Lanning acknowledged the imbalance in her lifestyle and the control it gave her during uncertain times regarding her future.
After facing insomnia and recognizing the unsustainable nature of her situation, Lanning sought professional help. She continues to play cricket domestically and has signed with London Spirit for The Hundred this year. Reflecting on her journey, Lanning expressed a newfound balance in life, stating, "I feel like I'm in a good spot now. Cricket is still part of what I do. But I wasn't cut out for the international touring schedule and what came with all of that."
Lanning's openness about her health challenges sheds light on the pressures faced by elite athletes and the importance of mental and physical well-being. Her story is a reminder of the critical need for balance and seeking help when needed, as she continues to contribute to cricket in a capacity that suits her current lifestyle.
