LPL 2024 Auction: Matheesha Pathirana Sets Record, Joins Colombo Strikers
Chennai Super Kings and Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana has set a new record in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) auction. The young bowler was sold for USD 120,000, making him the most expensive player in the league's history.
Pathirana, known for his Lasith Malinga-esque bowling style, has been gaining recognition with his performances in the IPL. During the LPL 2024 auction, he was sold to Colombo Strikers after they exercised their Right to Match (RTM) card.

The bidding started at a base price of USD 50,000 and escalated to USD 120,000 by Galle Marvels. However, Colombo Strikers retained Pathirana by matching the record bid. This amount translates to Rs 99.97 lakh in Indian currency and LKR 3.59 crore in Sri Lankan currency.
Matheesha Pathirana Career
The 21-year-old has played 12 ODIs and 6 T20Is for Sri Lanka, showing promise early in his international career. In addition to his national team appearances, Pathirana has played 20 matches for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), taking 34 wickets.
In the ongoing IPL 2024 season, Pathirana has picked up 13 wickets in just six matches. He is also part of the Sri Lanka squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.
