Ricky Ponting Urges Faith In Marnus Labuschagne As He Seeks To Reclaim Form In Second Test
Ricky Ponting, a former Australian cricket captain and ICC Hall of Famer, has expressed support for Marnus Labuschagne despite his recent poor form. Ponting believes Labuschagne can improve before the second Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Adelaide.
Labuschagne's performance in the first Test in Perth was disappointing, with scores of 2 and 3. Australia suffered a significant 295-run defeat. In the first innings, Labuschagne struggled, scoring only 2 runs from 52 balls.

During the current World Test Championship cycle, Labuschagne has scored just 658 runs across 13 Tests. His average is a mere 13.66 over five Tests since achieving two half-centuries against Pakistan in January this year.
Ponting advised that faith should be placed in "champion players" like Labuschagne but suggested he adjust his batting style to regain form during the series against India.
"I think you have to show faith in champion players. A lot of the guys that we're talking about in this team have been champion players. Maybe albeit not for a little while. I think I read somewhere the other day that Marnus is averaging 13 since January (after the Pakistan series) in Tests. So he's got to find a way to turn it around," Ponting said in the latest ICC Review episode.
Labuschagne, who once held the top spot among Test batters, has been crucial to Australia's success since debuting in the Ashes series of 2019. He boasts an average of 48.45 over 51 Tests but showed vulnerability during the Perth Test.
Ponting noted Labuschagne appeared particularly cautious compared to other batters during that match. He acknowledged the challenging conditions but stressed that facing top bowlers requires taking more risks.
"He was the one that looked most tentative to me out of all the batsmen in Perth. Yes, it was high-quality bowling. Yes, it was a difficult wicket to bat on. But when you're facing the best bowlers as a batsman, you have to take more risks," Ponting added.
Focus on Scoring Runs
Ponting urged Australian batters, including Labuschagne, to prioritise scoring rather than merely surviving upcoming Tests. This approach could be vital for defending their World Test Championship title.
"I think that's going to be a great challenge for Marnus and co. this week. It's probably just letting go a little bit. Think about scoring runs first and not think about getting out first. There's only one way to change it, and that is to be positive and show great intent," the former captain said.
The Australian team aims for improved batting performance as they prepare for their second Test at Adelaide Oval, starting Friday (December 6). This day-night match presents an opportunity for redemption and better results.
