Lucknow Super Giants' Captaincy Dilemma For IPL 2025: Rishabh Pant, Pooran, Markram Or Marsh?

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka discussed the team's leadership and opening batting options for IPL 2025. He mentioned that the franchise has an abundance of choices in both areas. The team is preparing for the upcoming season with a strong pool of candidates.

KL Rahul had been leading LSG since their debut in the Indian Premier League in 2022. Krunal Pandya also took on the captaincy when Rahul was unavailable during IPL 2023. However, neither player was retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last month.

The Lucknow Super Giants retained Nicholas Pooran, a West Indies wicketkeeper-batter, for Rs 21 Crore before the auction. They also added Rishabh Pant, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram to their leadership options. These players bring experience from leading their national teams.

Fans and experts are speculating about LSG's next captain, with many supporting Pant for the role. Goenka expressed satisfaction with their leadership pool and mentioned that an official announcement will be made soon. "People get surprised easily. I don't think you get surprised easily. It's been decided," Goenka stated on Aakash Chopra's YouTube channel.

With former openers KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, and Kyle Mayers released, questions arise about LSG's opening lineup. Goenka indicated that this decision would be made by the captain and coaching staff. He noted that Pant, Marsh, and Markram have previously opened for their national teams.

Goenka highlighted efforts to strengthen the middle order with an Indian core but acknowledged challenges during auctions. "We made a very big go for Jos Buttler but we fell one or two bid amounts short," he said. Decisions regarding the opening lineup will involve Zaheer Khan, Justin Langer, and the captain.

"Those are calls that frankly are beyond my capability and competence," Goenka admitted. He trusts Zak's thought process and supports whatever decision is made by Zak, Langer, and the captain after their discussions.

The franchise is optimistic about its prospects with a robust leadership team and potential opening options as they gear up for IPL 2025.
