IPL 2025: Exploring Lucknow Super Giants' Captaincy Options Post-KL Rahul

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are likely to appoint a new captain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Reports suggest that current skipper KL Rahul might be removed from his role after a disappointing season.

Rahul joined LSG before their debut in 2022 and was named captain. Under his leadership, the team reached the Eliminator in both 2022 and 2023 but finished seventh in the latest season.

During an interview, LSG and Indian spinner Amit Mishra hinted at the need for a captain with a strong T20 mindset. This suggests that the franchise might consider other candidates for the role.

If Rahul is indeed sacked or opts to leave before the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, LSG will need to find a new leader. The team has already played under two different captains when Rahul was unavailable in 2023 and used as an impact player in 2024.

The number of retentions allowed by BCCI will influence internal solutions. Reports indicate teams can retain only two players ahead of the Mega Auction.

If LSG retains their key overseas players, Nicholas Pooran is a strong candidate. Pooran, one of the best T20 batters, has already led the team and could take on the role permanently.

Krunal Pandya is another option, having led the team in Rahul's absence. However, his retention depends on the limited slots available during the retention window.

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is also a capable option. He could serve as deputy under Pooran or even lead under an Australian coach's guidance.

Considering Indian Players

If LSG prefers an Indian captain, Rohit Sharma could be an ideal choice. Rohit hinted that IPL 2024 might have been his last season with Mumbai Indians after losing his captaincy before that season.

Rohit would be a top contender if available, but he will attract interest from all franchises. Unless LSG outbids others, they might have to settle for Pooran as their long-term captain.

The franchise may ultimately stick with Pooran due to his decent record as captain in international circuits and T20 leagues worldwide. This decision would provide stability for LSG moving forward.
