Liam Livingstone Exits IPL 2024 For Knee Rehab Ahead Of T20 World Cup

New Delhi, May 13: Punjab Kings' all-rounder Liam Livingstone has made an early exit from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season to return to England for knee rehabilitation. This move comes in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup next month. The decision was made after Punjab Kings were eliminated from the playoff contention, having secured only four victories in 12 matches, placing them at the bottom of the league table with eight points.

Livingstone took to Instagram to share his departure, stating, "Another year in the IPL comes to an end. Had to address my knee concerns before the upcoming World Cup. Grateful to the Punjab Kings fans for their unwavering support. Despite a disappointing season collectively and individually, every moment spent in the IPL was cherished." Consequently, he will miss Punjab's final two games against Rajasthan Royals on May 15 and Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 19.

Livingstone Heads Home for Knee Rehab

Although his injury is not considered serious, England's cricket management has decided to allow him extra time for recovery. This is in anticipation of England's home T20I series against Pakistan starting May 22, as reported by ESPNCricinfo. Following this series, England, the defending champions, will head to the West Indies for their T20 World Cup campaign, kicking off on June 4 against Scotland in Bridgetown, Barbados.

During this IPL season, Livingstone's performance was modest, with a total of 111 runs from seven matches and three wickets to his name. In light of his departure, other England players participating in the IPL who are also included in the World Cup squad are expected to return to England shortly. This group includes notable names such as Moeen Ali from Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Sam Curran and Jonny Bairstow from Punjab Kings (PBKS), Jos Buttler from Rajasthan Royals (RR), Will Jacks and Reece Topley from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Phil Salt from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The early return of these players underscores the importance placed on ensuring they are in peak condition for the forthcoming T20 World Cup. As teams and players prioritize international commitments, the dynamic of league tournaments like the IPL continues to evolve, reflecting the global nature of cricket today.
