T20 World Cup 2024: Kohli And Sharma's Aggressive Batting Earns Praise

In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, senior Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma faced immense pressure due to their inconsistent form ahead of the Super 8 match against Bangladesh in Antigua on Saturday (June 22).

Rohit had managed only 74 runs in 4 games with a strike rate of 111.76, while Kohli had scored just 29 runs at a strike rate of 87.88. However, in the crucial Super 8 encounter, the stalwarts of Indian cricket decided to break free from their shackles and display their aggressive intent after being invited to bat first.

Kohli, Sharma Shine in T20 World Cup

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto introduced spinner Mehedi Hasan into the attack early. Rohit Sharma, who had scores of 13, 3, and 8 in his last three innings, began with a chip shot and ended the first over with a boundary via a sweep shot, signalling his intentions.

In the next over, Rohit swept Shakib Al Hasan with authority. Virat Kohli joined the aggressive approach, smashing Shakib for a maximum in the same over. The duo continued to dominate, scoring 15 runs off Tanzim Hasan Sakib's third over.

Rohit and Kohli looked determined to silence their critics and gave India a flying start. Rohit hammered Shakib for a six and a four before getting dismissed for 23 off 11 balls while attempting to hit Shakib over the mid-off region.

India's first wicket fell at 39, but Kohli remained undeterred and continued batting aggressively. Team India reached 53/1 in six overs, with Kohli hitting Rishad Hossain over the umpire's head for a maximum before getting dismissed for a 27-ball 37, including three sixes.

Middle Order Maintains Momentum

Suryakumar Yadav - who got off the mark with a maximum over fine leg - quickly joined Rohit and Kohli in the dugout but maintained an aggressive approach. Rishabh Pant, who has been like a man on a mission in the tournament, dealt some lusty blows to Mustafizur Rahman, hitting a couple of boundaries and a six in the 10th over.

In the next over, Pant struck Rishad Hossain for a four and a six before getting caught at short third while attempting a reverse sweep. Pant again played an aggressive knock of 36 off 24 balls, while many questioned the mode of his dismissal. However, with his aggressive intent the left-handed batter just kept proving 'you live by the sword, you die by one'.

Pandya and Dube Steady the Ship

Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya then steadied the innings. Pandya, who became the first Indian to score a fifty in the T20 World Cup at number 5, shared a crucial partnership of 53 runs with Dube, ensuring India posted a competitive total of 196 runs in the allotted 20 overs. The Indian team's new batting approach was a breath of fresh air as they maintained a high scoring rate despite losing wickets.

Reactions from Teammates and Former Cricketers

Impressed by his teammates' intent, R Ashwin posted on X, "We are not used to an approach where batsmen throw it away after making 30s or 20s, but it is about time we embrace an approach like this especially while batting first. Top Intent from all the Indian batters so far." Ashwin also disagreed with a user on X who questioned Pant's dismissal mode, stating he didn't agree.

Former Indian cricketers also lauded the team's performance. Sanjay Manjrekar posted, "With this Indian team you don't look at who has got out; look at only the run rate as they go along. That's the strength of this Indian team!" Robin Uthappa wrote, "A solid batting display by India and a fiery 50 from @hardikpandya7." Mohammed Kaif commented, "Power of India blues: Struggling in IPL, Hardik Pandya becomes champion all-rounder again to get 196 runs on the board!!"

The Super 8 clash against Bangladesh marked a significant turnaround for senior Indian batters Kohli and Rohit, showcasing their ability to adapt and lead from the front under pressure. Their change of approach will hold them in good stead ahead of the high-stakes game against Australia and later in the knockout stage.
