KL Rahul Explains Departure From LSG And Desire For A Lighter Team Atmosphere In IPL 2025
KL Rahul, India's renowned batter and former captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), recently discussed his exit from the team before the IPL 2025 mega auction. This move concludes a three-year stint during which he led LSG to the playoffs twice. Despite these achievements, the franchise chose not to retain him after the 2024 season.
Rahul shared his thoughts on Star Sports' Unplugged, explaining his decision to leave LSG and his hopes for the next IPL season. "I wanted to start fresh, I wanted to explore my options and I wanted to go and play where I could find some freedom, where the team atmosphere could be something lighter," Rahul stated in the promo. He highlighted that sometimes change is necessary, saying, "you need to move away and find something good for yourself."

During his tenure with LSG, Rahul experienced both triumphs and hurdles. As their first draft pick in 2022, he amassed 1,410 runs over three seasons with an average of 41.47. However, his strike rate of 130.67 faced criticism despite making him the franchise's top run-scorer with two centuries.
Tensions reportedly arose in 2024 when Sanjiv Goenka, the franchise owner, publicly criticized the team after a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. This incident may have influenced Rahul's decision to leave LSG.
Rahul's departure from LSG is not just about joining a new team; it's also part of his strategy to rejoin India's T20 squad. Having last played for India in T20Is at the 2022 World Cup, he views IPL as crucial for his return. "I have been out of the T20 team for a while, and I know where I stand as a player," Rahul said.
"I'll look forward to this IPL season to give me that platform where I can go back and enjoy my cricket. My aim is to obviously get back into the Indian T20 team," he added. The mega auction will take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah.
Future Prospects in IPL Auction
Rahul's skills as a keeper-opener and seasoned captain make him highly desirable in the upcoming auction. He seeks a team that offers a "lighter atmosphere," allowing him freedom to play naturally and rebuild his reputation in Indian cricket.
