Kolkata Knight Riders' Retention Plan For IPL 2025: A Strategic Overview

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched the IPL 2024 title with an emphatic 8-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, May 26.

After narrowly missing the title in 2021 and finishing seventh in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, KKR topped the points table at the end of the league phase. This victory marks their third IPL title, ending a decade-long wait.

KKR's IPL 2025 Retention Plan

Despite losing several players to injury or personal reasons before the season began, KKR made effective replacements, notably bringing in Phil Salt for Jason Roy.

The newly-crowned champions aim to continue with the same squad next season. However, they may need to rebuild due to the 2025 mega auction, which allows only a limited number of player retentions.

Before the previous IPL Mega Auction in 2022, KKR retained West Indies stars Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, along with Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer.

Teams are reportedly allowed only four retentions like previous auctions. However, franchise owners have requested the BCCI to increase this number to eight.

While there is no official confirmation on retention numbers for IPL 2025, it is likely that only four players will be retained by each team. Additionally, a Right To Match (RTM) card may be available for every team.

Several players are on KKR's retention radar, but many will be released ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, which could take place between December 2024 and February 2025.

The Caribbean duo of Narine and Russell are expected to be KKR's first two picks. The remaining slots could see competition among Shreyas Iyer, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana, Nitish Rana, and Mitchell Starc.

Varun Chakravarthy has been a key player for KKR in recent seasons and is likely to be retained again. The final retention decision will be challenging for the Knights.

Nitish Rana, Harshit Rana, Starc, and other stars may be considered during the auction. Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, and Venkatesh Iyer are strong candidates for the final retention slot. It is probable that KKR will choose Shreyas as their skipper again.

Venkatesh Iyer was among the retentions before the last mega auction. He will compete with Rinku Singh and Nitish Rana for RTM options.

Some players' tenure with KKR may have ended. The franchise hopes BCCI will expand retention slots or provide more RTM cards. If only four retentions and one RTM are allowed, KKR might face disappointment. Here is a possible retention list:
