KKR Set To Appoint Ajinkya Rahane As Captain For IPL 2025 After Mega Auction Acquisition Of Venkatesh Iyer
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are reportedly planning to name Ajinkya Rahane as their captain for IPL 2025. This decision comes despite the team acquiring Venkatesh Iyer for a significant ₹23.75 crore during the mega auction in Jeddah.
Rahane was brought in at his base price of ₹1.5 crore, specifically to assume the leadership role. According to a report from The Times of India, a source mentioned that Rahane's captaincy is nearly confirmed. "Yes, at the moment it's 90% confirmed that Ajinkya will be the new KKR captain. He was bought by KKR specifically for the purpose of being a viable captaincy option," the source stated.

Ajinkya Rahane, aged 36, has an impressive leadership record. He led India to a memorable Test series win in Australia during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has captained several domestic teams. However, his IPL captaincy experience is limited to leading Rajasthan Royals in 2018 and 2019, achieving nine wins out of 24 matches.
This decision by KKR surprised many, especially since Venkatesh Iyer had expressed his interest in leading the team. In an interview with JioCinema, Iyer said, "I have always believed that captaincy is just a tag, but leadership is about creating an environment where everyone feels they can play for this team and contribute. If given the responsibility, I would be more than happy to do it."
Iyer has been crucial for KKR over the past four years and worked closely with head coach Chandrakant Pandit. He was seen as a natural choice for captaincy after serving as vice-captain and briefly leading during Nitish Rana's absence last season.
Rahane's potential appointment might indicate a strategic change for KKR as they aim to defend their IPL 2024 title. His calm demeanor and tactical skills are considered valuable assets for guiding a team that retains key players like Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell while adding significant signings such as Iyer, Anrich Nortje (₹6.5 crore), and Quinton de Kock (₹3.6 crore).
Future Leadership Prospects
If Rahane's appointment is finalized, he would succeed Shreyas Iyer, who led KKR to their championship victory last season before joining Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore. Meanwhile, KKR might consider grooming Venkatesh Iyer as a future leader by potentially assigning him vice-captaincy in the upcoming season.
