Jos Buttler To Remain As England White-Ball Captain, ECB Announces
Jos Buttler will continue to lead England in the white-ball format, confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday, July 30. This announcement coincided with Marcus Trescothick's appointment as the interim head coach for the ODI and T20I formats following Matthew Pott's resignation.
Under Buttler's captaincy, England clinched the T20 World Cup title in 2022. However, they also lost two World Cups within the past year. In the T20 World Cup 2024, they were defeated by eventual champions India in the semi-final. Additionally, they finished seventh in the ten-team ODI World Cup 2024.

The defending champions managed to secure only three wins and were at risk of not qualifying for the Champions Trophy 2025. The top eight teams from the World Cup 2023 were set to qualify for this tournament alongside hosts Pakistan.
Rob Key, England's director of cricket, highlighted Trescothick's positive relationship with Buttler while announcing his appointment. "Marcus Trescothick is well respected in the dressing room and will take charge of team affairs alongside white-ball captain Jos Buttler. Marcus and Jos have a good rapport, and I think their partnership will help us maintain continuity and stability," Rob Key stated.
Trescothick expressed his enthusiasm about working with Buttler and outlined their focus on upcoming series. "I am looking forward to working with Jos Buttler, the players and coaches over the next few weeks. The focus is building towards the series against Australia and our plans for next year's Champions Trophy campaign," he said.
Future Plans
Trescothick also emphasised England cricket's strong position and potential due to their quality players. He mentioned that it is crucial to harness this potential and build on the work done by Matthew Mott and his team. "England cricket is in a strong position, and the potential is huge, given the quality we have available. It is about harnessing that potential and developing the work that has already been put in place by Mathew Mott and the rest of the set-up. I'm excited about the challenge and shaping how we want to play," he added.
