SA20 2025: Joe Root And Ben Stokes To Debut With Paarl Royals And MI Cape Town
SA20 2025 is expected to feature two prominent England Test players, with Ben Stokes reportedly set to join Joe Root in the tournament. This move comes as both players look to expand their T20 careers.
England's top batter Joe Root, who previously played for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been signed by the Paarl Royals. The franchise announced this exciting addition last week.

Kumar Sangakkara, Royals' Director of Cricket, expressed his delight at having Root back. He praised Root's all-round abilities and his contributions to various teams over the years.
"We all know what a phenomenal player Joe Root is, and to have him back at the Royals is a great feeling. He has been a great contributor to all the teams he has represented over the years, and has also proven to be a valuable all-rounder with his bowling and fielding attributes," Sangakkara was quoted as saying in a release.
Reports suggest that England's red-ball captain Ben Stokes will also make his SA20 debut alongside Root. With no Tests scheduled for England during January-February next year, it seems likely.
The Telegraph reported that MI Cape Town, affiliated with Mumbai Indians, has offered Stokes a lucrative contract for the upcoming SA20 season. This would mark another significant step in Stokes' T20 career.
Stokes had earlier secured Rs 16.25 Crore from Chennai Super Kings before IPL 2023 but made limited appearances and opted out of IPL 2024 auction. His focus had been on preparing for Test cricket after stepping away from limited-overs formats post-ODI World Cup 2023.
Root's T20 Experience
The 33-year-old Root has played in 105 T20 matches across major leagues like IPL (Rajasthan Royals), Big Bash (Sydney Thunder), and ILT20 (Dubai Capitals). His experience will be invaluable for Paarl Royals in SA20 next year.
Sangakkara highlighted Root's team spirit and ability to help teammates develop both on and off the field. "As we saw during IPL 2023 and have also seen over the years, he is also a great team man, and has the ability to help his teammates develop both on and off the field. We are looking forward to using his expertise, his personality, his brains, and also his performances on the field to strive towards a successful SA20 season in 2025."
This development marks an exciting phase for SA20 as it attracts top international talent like Stokes and Root. Their participation will undoubtedly raise the profile of the tournament.
