Jay Shah Commences Tenure As ICC Chairman With Focus On Inclusivity And Fan Engagement

Jay Shah has embarked on his journey as the new International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman. He aims to make cricket more inclusive and engaging for fans globally. Previously, he served as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary. His tenure began on December 1, marking a significant transition in leadership.

"The International Cricket Council (ICC) today - 1 December - marked the beginning of Jay Shah's tenure as ICC Chair," an ICC statement read as the former BCCI Secretary takes over new role.

Shah has outlined his priorities, focusing on leveraging cricket's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. He also aims to accelerate the growth of women's cricket. These initiatives are seen as pivotal opportunities to expand the sport's reach and popularity worldwide.

"I am honoured to take on the role of ICC Chair and grateful for the support and trust of the ICC Directors and Member Boards. This is an exciting time for the sport as we prepare for the LA28 Olympic Games and work to make cricket more inclusive and engaging for fans worldwide," Shah was quoted by ICC as saying.

Jay Shah succeeds Greg Barclay, who led from November 2020. Shah expressed gratitude towards Barclay for his leadership and achievements during his tenure. He looks forward to collaborating with ICC members to further expand cricket's global presence.

"I would also like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership in the role for the past four years and the milestones achieved during that period. I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and the Member countries to expand the game's reach and evolution on the global stage," he said.

Background in Cricket Administration

Shah brings a wealth of experience from his time with Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), starting in 2009. He played a key role in developing Ahmedabad's world-class cricket stadium. In 2019, he became BCCI's youngest honorary Secretary, showcasing his commitment to advancing cricket administration.

In August 2024, Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the next Chairman of the ICC. Shah was the sole nominee for the chairmanship after Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term, as per a media release by ICC.

Challenges Ahead

Shah assumes leadership amid unresolved issues regarding next year's ICC Champions Trophy. The tournament is likely to be held in a hybrid format, with India's matches at a neutral venue, probably in UAE. This situation presents both challenges and opportunities for innovative solutions.

"We are at a critical juncture with the coexistence of multiple formats and the need to accelerate the growth of the women's game. Cricket holds immense potential globally, and I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and Member countries to seize these opportunities and take the sport to new heights," he added.

As Jay Shah steps into this influential role, he is poised to guide cricket through its evolving landscape while fostering inclusivity and engagement among fans worldwide.
