Jay Shah Can Elevate Global Cricket But Must Balance India's Influence, Says Greg Barclay
Greg Barclay, who recently concluded his four-year term as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chair on December 1, expressed his support for Jay Shah, his successor. However, he also offered a word of caution regarding the future of cricket under Shah's leadership.
Barclay acknowledged India's vital role in cricket, calling it a "massive contributor" in various aspects. Yet, he cautioned that India's dominant influence might impede the sport's global expansion. He suggested that India could lead by supporting smaller nations and pooling broadcasting rights to help financially weaker members.

"India's influence can unify and expand the game," Barclay noted. He proposed using India's teams to assist smaller cricketing nations and exploring new markets with their clout. Barclay emphasized the potential for India to elevate cricket without making it solely about Indian interests.
During his tenure, Barclay faced numerous challenges, including the congested international cricket calendar. He described it as being "in a mess" due to self-interest among stakeholders. This situation made resolving scheduling issues nearly impossible.
Barclay lamented the over-saturation of cricket matches, admitting he often lost track of games worldwide. "I reckon, gee, I'm at the apex of the game, and I can't tell you who's playing around the world," he said.
Barclay also addressed Afghanistan's Full Membership status despite restrictions on women's cricket by the Taliban. He defended the ICC's decision not to revoke it, stating that it's not the Afghanistan board's fault as they operate under a decree.
Afghanistan's Cricket Dilemma
"It is not the Afghanistan board's fault. They used to have women's cricket. They're working under a decree," Barclay explained. He believes cricket could be a "force for good" in Afghanistan, offering hope amid difficult circumstances.
Criticizing double standards in global cricket, Barclay took aim at boards like Cricket Australia for canceling bilateral series with Afghanistan while still playing against them in ICC tournaments. "If you want to make a political statement, don't play them in a World Cup. Principles are principles," he asserted.
The former BCCI secretary has an opportunity to elevate cricket globally but must avoid making it solely about India. Barclay remains optimistic about Shah's potential to lead effectively while ensuring balanced growth for international cricket.
