Umpire Joe Wilson initially seemed unconvinced by India's appeal but raised his finger as Liyanage started walking off. Replays later confirmed that there was no edge, leaving the Sri Lankan coaching staff stunned.

The incident occurred on the second ball of the 35th over. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel bowled a tossed-up delivery to Liyanage, who attempted to hit it over the boundary. The ball spun away, hitting wicket-keeper KL Rahul's thigh and deflecting towards Rohit Sharma for an easy catch.

Replays showed that Liyanage's bat only hit the ground and did not make contact with the ball. UltraEdge technology also confirmed no spike, proving there was no edge. This wicket ended a crucial 41-run partnership between Liyanage and Dunith Wellalage.

Liyanage scored 20 off 26 balls before his dismissal. His partnership with Wellalage came after Sri Lanka were reduced to 101/5 by India. If he had shown more awareness, this partnership could have added crucial runs for Sri Lanka.

Ahead of the first ODI, Sanath Jayasuriya spoke about improving cricket awareness within the team. He stated, "I don't see a lack of commitment, but they have got to tackle pressure better. Their cricket awareness also needs sharpening."
