Jake Fraser-McGurk's Dream Fulfilled With Reserve Spot In Australia's T20 World Cup Squad

Young batter Jake Fraser-McGurk's aspiration to join the Australian T20 World Cup 2024 squad as a reserve has materialised. On Tuesday, May 21, he was added as a travelling reserve alongside all-rounder Matt Short.

The 22-year-old Fraser-McGurk impressed during his IPL debut season with Delhi Capitals, scoring four half-centuries in nine games at a strike rate exceeding 234. He amassed 330 runs, including 32 boundaries and 28 sixes, prompting calls for his inclusion in the main squad.

Fraser-McGurk Added to T20 World Cup Squad

Despite being omitted from the preliminary squad, Fraser-McGurk expressed hope of being included as a reserve. His wish was granted when he was named a travelling reserve for the World Cup in the West Indies and USA next month.

Australian cricket team coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the inclusion of Fraser-McGurk and Short as travelling reserves, citing their unique contributions to the team. "I think they're slightly different in what they offer," McDonald told Sen Radio.

McDonald elaborated that Short could be valuable if Glenn Maxwell gets injured, given his spin bowling ability and middle-order batting skills. Fraser-McGurk provides backup for the top order.

"We feel like he's a spinning all-rounder much like Glenn Maxwell if anything should move there, and obviously Jake Fraser-McGurk is an out-and-out top order player," McDonald added.

Although McDonald acknowledged the potential of Fraser-McGurk and Short, he clarified that they would only play if there were injuries in the squad. "Both exciting, I think they both add a lot. Those guys sit outside of the 15; the only way they can come onto the selection table is if there was to be an injury," he said.

The coach also mentioned that Australia has other options available in case of injuries, particularly in the pace bowling department. "We've got some other options in Spencer Johnson, Xavier Bartlett that are playing in the UK as well," McDonald noted.

The Australian team is scheduled to depart for the World Cup on Wednesday, May 22. Key players like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Travis Head, Maxwell, and Cameron Green are expected to join after their IPL commitments.
