IPL Mega Auction 2025: Comprehensive Overview Of Total Money Spent In Auctions From 2008 To 2024

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Mega Auction 2025 is set to occur in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25. This event will feature over 500 players available for bidding. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has increased each franchise's budget by Rs 10 Crore from the previous year, setting the new limit at Rs 120 Crore.

In IPL history, spending has consistently risen, with the highest expenditure recorded in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. During that event, ten franchises spent over Rs 500 Crore, surpassing the previous record from the IPL 2018 Mega Auction when eight teams spent more than Rs 400 Crore.

IPL Mega Auction Spending Overview for 2025

Franchises have been spending more due to increased budgets. The IPL 2014 Mega Auction marked a significant milestone when eight founding members exceeded Rs 200 Crore for the first time. This trend continued in the IPL 2024 auction, where even a mini auction saw spending surpass Rs 200 Crore.

This season, some teams have already used over half of their budget on retaining key players. Despite this, they are expected to spend heavily at the upcoming auction, potentially breaking previous records. The retention process has led to varying budgets among teams as they prepare for the big auction.

Initially, transactions were conducted in US Dollars before switching to Indian Rupees in 2014. Over the years, franchise spending has grown significantly due to increased budgets. Here's a look at how much money was spent in each IPL Auction from 2008 to 2024:

  • IPL 2008 Auction - $36.43 Million US Dollars by eight teams
  • IPL 2009 Auction - $7.65 Million US Dollars by eight teams
  • IPL 2010 Auction - $3.65 Million US Dollars by eight teams

  • IPL 2023 Auction - Rs 167 Crore by ten teams
  • IPL 2024 Auction - Rs 230.45 Crore by ten teams

The increase in franchise budgets has led to higher spending at auctions over time. Notably, during the recent IPL auctions, Australia pacer Mitchell Starc became a record-breaking purchase, followed closely by his compatriot Pat Cummins as another significant buy.

The upcoming auction is anticipated to set new records as franchises aim to strengthen their squads with top talent available for bidding.
