IPL Auction 2025: Analyzing The Five Most Overpriced Buys Including Shreyas Iyer And Venkatesh Iyer
The IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24th and 25th, was marked by record-breaking bids and surprising choices. While some players secured high prices deservedly, others received hefty contracts that puzzled many due to their recent form.
This year's auction saw franchises spending aggressively, with some deals viewed as potential overpays by fans and analysts. For example, Kolkata Knight Riders spent Rs. 23.75 crores on Venkatesh Iyer, making it the third most expensive purchase of this auction.

Venkatesh Iyer (Rs. 23.75 crores): Joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2021, Iyer has been a regular starter. His performance in IPL 2024 was crucial for KKR, but inconsistency remains a concern for critics.
Despite achieving four consecutive 50+ scores in the playoffs, Iyer's total of 370 runs last season is modest compared to other top IPL batters.
Shreyas Iyer (Rs. 26.75 crores): Punjab Kings spent Rs. 26.75 crores on Shreyas Iyer, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history. Although he had a strong IPL 2024 as captain and batter, the price tag is debated.
The former captain of the defending champions was released by KKR before the auction. Despite decent performances over the years, his recent lack of game-changing displays raises questions about his high bid.
Yuzvendra Chahal (Rs. 18 crores): Chahal is the only bowler with over 200 wickets in IPL history but is past his peak form. In the last mega auction, RR bought him for Rs. 6.50 crores.
Though he continued taking wickets last season, his rising economy rate makes it debatable if he's worth such a high price now.
Jitesh Sharma (Rs. 11 crores): The wicket-keeper was acquired by RCB for Rs. 11 crores in this auction. Despite decent domestic performances, Sharma's IPL outings have been average.
In IPL 2024, he scored just 187 runs across 14 matches with three consecutive ducks, making his high price surprising.
Jofra Archer (Rs. 12.50 crores): The English all-rounder joined RR in this mega auction despite inconsistent recent performances due to injuries.
After rehabilitation, Archer returned sporadically but struggled with consistency; his brief stint with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023 yielded only two wickets in five games.
The spending highlights how franchises sometimes prioritise reputation over performance at IPL auctions, making them not just cricketing events but also studies of strategy and risk-taking.
