IPL Auction 2025: Chennai Super Kings Invest ₹10 Crore In Noor Ahmad For Spin Strategy

In a significant move at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured Afghanistan's left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad for an impressive ₹10 crore. This acquisition marks a strategic investment by CSK in enhancing their spin bowling options.

The bidding for Noor Ahmad was intense, with CSK initially securing him for ₹5 crore. However, Gujarat Titans (GT) used their Right to Match (RTM) card, prompting CSK to double their offer to ₹10 crore, ultimately leading GT to withdraw from the race.

CSK's strategy at the auction also included acquiring Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra. These additions reflect CSK's focus on strengthening their spin department and investing in young talent for future success.

Noor Ahmad's journey in the IPL began with Gujarat Titans in 2022, but his breakthrough came in 2023. Over two seasons, he played 23 matches, taking 24 wickets with an average of 27.46 and an economy rate of 8.04. His standout performance was a spell of 3/37, demonstrating his ability to control the middle overs effectively.

Stephen Fleming, CSK's head coach, emphasised Noor's potential impact in spin-friendly conditions at Chepauk. "The Noor Ahmad pick was looking more at the middle overs to attack," Fleming told media. "If we do get turning conditions, then we've got an opportunity to keep taking wickets."

Noor Ahmad is known for his unique skill set as a left-arm leg-spinner, a rarity in cricket today. His consistent performances have established him as a reliable wicket-taker both in the IPL and on the international stage.

In IPL 2023, he played 13 matches and took 16 wickets with an economy rate under eight. In the following season, he claimed eight wickets across ten games. Internationally, he maintains an economy rate below seven in both ODIs and T20Is.

With ₹15.60 crore remaining in their budget, CSK has ample room to further strengthen their squad on day two of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Their focus remains on building a spinner-heavy team that can excel under various playing conditions.
