IPL Franchises Push For Extended Auction Cycle And More Retentions Before 2025 Season

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are expected to request a longer interval between mega auctions, more retention slots, and additional Right to Match (RTM) options in their upcoming meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

According to ESPN Cricinfo, some teams want the mega auction cycle extended from three to five years. This extension would help them build a team and nurture young Indian uncapped players effectively.

IPL 2025: Calls for Longer Auctions, More Retentions

The first Mega Auction occurred in 2018, followed by another in 2022, with a four-year gap. However, the next two-day auction is set for IPL 2025, just three years after the last one. It is likely to be held at the end of this year or early 2025.

BCCI had previously confirmed that the IPL 2025 auction would be a mega event like in 2022, allowing each franchise to retain only up to four players. However, some teams are dissatisfied with this limit and are pushing for an increase to eight retentions.

Another demand is to raise the retention limit from four to six players and allow RTM for up to eight players. These issues will be discussed when IPL franchise representatives meet with BCCI later this month.

"Such an approach would allow the market to determine a player's price and also remove any monetary disappointment a player may have if they are last in the retention pecking order," stated the report from Cricinfo.

Potential Benefits for Major Teams

Teams like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders could benefit significantly if the retention number increases. However, they still need to convince players to accept offered contracts within the salary cap likely introduced this year.

Regarding RTMs, one franchise CEO suggested retaining only key players like captains while using RTM cards at auctions for others. "While such a combination is favoured by some franchises, at least one team official said it had potential to cause disgruntlement among the players retained ahead of the auction if those bought back via the RTM option happened to secure higher bids."

Impact Player Rule and Other Discussions

Apart from auction dynamics such as purse and salary caps, discussions about the Impact Player rule will also take place during meetings between IPL franchises and BCCI on either July 30 or 31.

The upcoming meeting will address these demands and other concerns related to auction procedures. The outcome could significantly impact how teams strategise for future seasons.

The conclusion of these discussions will shape the future structure of IPL auctions and team compositions. The decisions made will influence how franchises plan their squads moving forward.
