IPL 2025 Auction: Will Kolkata Knight Riders Re-Sign Nitish Rana As Captain?
The IPL 2025 mega auction is set for 24-25 November 2024. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will participate with six retained players and a budget of Rs. 51 crore. Despite keeping their core team, they have released several key players, including captain Shreyas Iyer.
Nitish Rana, a crucial player for KKR in recent years, has also been let go. Rana served as vice-captain and led the team in IPL 2023 when Shreyas Iyer was injured. His departure leaves a gap in both batting and leadership.

Since joining KKR in 2018 for Rs. 3.4 crore, Nitish Rana has played 90 matches and scored 2199 runs. Although he missed most of the last IPL season due to injury, his middle-order batting skills and leadership qualities make him valuable.
KKR has retained players like Sunil Narine, Andre Russel, Rinku Singh, and Varun Chakravarthy to maintain their bowling unit and lower middle order. However, they released their entire top order, including Rana.
The Knights need to fill the opener spot and upper middle order in their batting line-up. With Shreyas Iyer gone, they also need a new captain. Rana could fit these roles well, making him a likely target for KKR.
KKR faces challenges due to a limited budget after retaining six players and no 'Right to Match' option available. Other franchises with larger budgets may also pursue players like Rana.
IPL 2025 Auction: Teams Interested in Nitish Rana
Nitish Rana's left-handed batting skills, flexibility in positions, ability against spin, and aggressive style made him vital for KKR. His IPL experience and leadership add value in the auction. Here are teams besides KKR that might target him:
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals (DC) have released most key batters except Tristan Stubbs and Abishek Porel. They seek experienced batters who can anchor innings, making Rana's leadership appealing.
Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings (PBKS) are rebuilding their squad from scratch after releasing many players. An experienced batter like Rana could provide stability under pressure situations that PBKS often lacked.
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained only Ruturaj Gaikwad as a top-order batter. They need another experienced player for the top or upper middle order to anchor innings. Rana's spin-playing ability suits Chepauk's pitch well.
The upcoming auction presents opportunities for teams to strengthen their squads with experienced players like Nitish Rana. While KKR hopes to bring him back, competition from other franchises could make it challenging.
