IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Date, Venue, And Team Strategies Unveiled

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season concluding on Sunday, May 26, attention now shifts to the next season. Teams will soon be busy planning their retention and release lists ahead of the next IPL auction.

After over two months of continuous action, the season ended with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, clinching their third IPL title.

While KKR and SRH reached the final, Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finished as the third and fourth-placed sides respectively on the IPL 2024 points table. Despite their higher finishes, RR and RCB will also be eager to strengthen their squads for next season.

Apart from KKR, SRH, RR, and RCB, other teams such as Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Mumbai Indians will all be busy with retentions and planning for the next auction. This auction is set to be a mega auction similar to 2022.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that a mega auction will be held before next year's Indian Premier League - IPL 2025 during an interview with Sportstar before the start of the 2024 season. Here are the details:

The next IPL Mega Auction is likely to be a two-day process similar to 2022. In 2022, the auction took place in February, while the 2023 and 2024 auctions were held in December. Therefore, the IPL 2025 Auction date could possibly be between December 2024 and February 2025.

Where will IPL Mega Auction take place?

The last IPL Mega Auction in 2022 was held in Bengaluru at a private hotel. The 2023 and 2024 editions were held in new locations - Kerala and UAE respectively. The venue for the IPL Auction 2025 will be announced by the BCCI soon.

How many players will a team be allowed to retain ahead of IPL 2025 Auction?

As per IPL chairman Dhumal's comments, each team will have the opportunity to retain only three to four players like in the IPL 2022 mega auction. That auction saw a total of 204 players being sold for Rs 551 crore.

In IPL 2025 Mega Auction, similar figures could be seen if the retention number is limited to a maximum of four players per team. However, official confirmation on the number of players allowed to be retained will come only after stakeholders meet with BCCI in the coming days.

When is the retention deadline day before IPL auction 2025?

The window is usually a month ahead of the next auction. Therefore, the retention deadline could be sometime in November or January depending on when the mega auction will be held. The exact date for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction will be revealed soon.

Is there a trade window before IPL 2025 Auction?

There is no information on the trade window before the next IPL yet. Typically, it opens a month before the auction and closes for a week heading into it. The window usually reopens the day after the auction and runs until a month before the season starts.
