IPL 2024 Sees Fierce Battle For Purple Cap After Bumrah Sits Out

Jasprit Bumrah's opportunity to secure his first Indian Premier League (IPL) Purple Cap concluded when Mumbai Indians decided to rest their leading pacer for the final league match against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday, May 17, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Bumrah, who was second in the race for most wickets this season with 20 wickets, was replaced by Arjun Tendulkar in the playing XI. With the season nearing its end and the T20 World Cup 2024 just weeks away, Mumbai Indians opted to give Bumrah a break ahead of the major tournament.

Tight Race for IPL 2024 Purple Cap

This decision, however, cost Bumrah a chance at winning the IPL Purple Cap. The award is now likely to be contested by former winners or potentially a new contender in the remaining seven matches, including four playoff games. Below is a look at the current Purple Cap leaderboard:

IPL 2024 Purple Cap Standings

  1. Harshal Patel (PBKS) - 22 wickets in 13 innings
  2. Jasprit Bumrah (MI) - 20 wickets in 13 innings
  3. Varun Chakravarthy (KKR) - 18 wickets in 12 innings
  4. Mukesh Kumar (DC) - 17 wickets in 10 innings
  5. Yuzvendra Chahal (RR) - 17 wickets in 13 innings
  6. Arshdeep Singh (PBKS) - 17 wickets in 13 innings
  7. Khaleel Ahmed (DC) - 17 wickets in 14 innings
  8. Harshit Rana (KKR) - 16 wickets in 9 innings
  9. Kuldeep Yadav (DC) - 16 wickets in 11 innings
  10. Tushar Deshpande (CSK) - 16 wickets in 12 innings

Several players within the top ten will not participate further this season as their teams have completed their league matches. Consequently, bowlers from Delhi Capitals like Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mukesh Kumar will not have opportunities to add to their wicket tallies.

Punjab Kings' Harshal Patel currently leads with 22 wickets from 13 matches and has one more game to extend his lead. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal, Varun Chakravarthy, and Harshit Rana could catch up as they are expected to play more matches.

Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals are heading into the playoffs, making it a potential contest between Chakravarthy and Chahal if Harshal Patel does not increase his tally in his final match on Sunday, May 19.

If Chennai Super Kings qualify for the playoffs, Tushar Deshpande and KKR's Harshit Rana could also challenge for the top spot. Several other players from playoff-qualified teams are also among the top twenty wicket-takers this season.
