IPL 2024 Playoffs: How Both RCB And CSK Can Qualify For The Knockout Round

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to face off on Saturday, May 18, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This match holds significant importance for securing a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs.

CSK, with 14 points from 13 matches and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.528, is in a favourable position to finish in the top four on the points table. RCB, on the other hand, has 12 points from 13 matches and an NRR of +0.387. They need to win by a substantial margin to surpass CSK.

For RCB to overtake CSK, they must win by an 18-run margin or chase down a target within 18.1 overs. A washout or a victory for CSK, or even an RCB win by a small margin, will see CSK advance to the knockouts.

Fans of both teams may face disappointment if the match ends in a washout. However, there is still a possibility for both Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to remain in the tournament if other results favour them.

For both RCB and CSK to qualify, RCB must first win their match by less than 17 runs or complete a chase in more than 18.2 overs. This alone will not be sufficient for RCB to join CSK in the playoffs.

RCB will also need other results to go their way should they beat CSK by a smaller margin. If both teams end up with 14 points each, they will hope for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to lose their remaining two matches by significant margins.

Although there is a chance for both CSK and RCB to qualify at the expense of another Southern side, it is unlikely for SRH to lose both their matches heavily. Even if SRH loses, it is improbable that they will suffer large defeats.

SRH is scheduled to play against Gujarat Titans on May 16 and Punjab Kings on May 19. Meanwhile, CSK and RCB will clash on May 18, where one team is expected to exit the tournament.
