IPL 2024 Playoffs: How Rain Delays And Washouts Are Handled
As the IPL 2024 league stages conclude, attention shifts to the decisive playoff matches. However, natural factors are expected to influence the playoffs as we approach the end of May. Rainfall in parts of India, primarily due to western disturbances and high moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, has led to delays and washouts in several matches.
When rain disrupts play during IPL Playoff matches, organisers follow a set protocol to ensure fairness. An extra time of 120 minutes is allotted for such situations, allowing the match to resume and ideally conclude on the scheduled day.

If rain persists and the match cannot be completed within this extra time, it is rescheduled to be played on a reserve day. This ensures that every effort is made to complete the match on its original date before resorting to a reschedule.
If an IPL Playoff match, such as Qualifier 1 or the Eliminator, is completely washed out due to persistent rain, specific measures are implemented. Fortunately, IPL Playoff matches have a reserve day allocated precisely for this purpose.
On the reserve day, the match is rescheduled and played from the beginning. This gives both teams another chance to compete for victory, ensuring that adverse weather conditions do not unfairly affect the outcome of crucial matches.
Given India's unpredictable weather patterns during the IPL season, rain delays and washouts are not uncommon. Some league stage matches, like those between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans, and Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders, were abandoned due to rain.
The IPL Playoff schedule includes Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final, with reserve days allocated for each match to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions.
