IPL 2024: LSG Coach Justin Langer Clarifies KL Rahul And Sanjiv Goenka Episode
Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer has addressed the recent controversy involving team owner Sanjiv Goenka and skipper KL Rahul. The incident occurred following LSG's defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2024.
Goenka was seen in a heated discussion with Rahul after SRH chased down 166 runs within 10 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on May 8. The clip went viral, drawing criticism from fans and commentators alike. Speculation arose that Rahul might not play for the franchise again and could leave the team before the next season.

Reports also suggested that Rahul did not travel with the squad to Delhi for their match against Delhi Capitals on May 14, following the alleged rift with Goenka. However, Langer clarified that the discussion "might have looked aggressive, but it was quite tame."
"It's a massive storm in a teacup, in fact, in an espresso cup. The thing that fascinates me about India is this incredible passion for cricket. Mr. Goenka is no different. I'm no different. KL is no different," Langer said in an interview with Times of India (TOI).
"Our plan for the game against SRH didn't go perfectly. In fact, it was a disaster. After the game, Mr. Goenka came onto the field and asked KL, 'What happened? Our plan that we talked about hasn't worked. What do we do now?' And then we talked through it," Langer added.
Langer emphasized that due to the lack of sound, people may have misunderstood the discussion as aggressive. He reiterated that it was a tame conversation and highlighted that the owners have given them freedom to manage their affairs.
"The sound was off; no one heard what was said. It might have looked quite aggressive, but it was really quite tame," Langer explained regarding the post-match discussion between Rahul and Goenka.
"When I first came to IPL, many people told me the biggest challenge was dealing with owners who want to be involved. The truth is the owners have just let KL and me go about our business. It's been such a relaxed experience at LSG," Langer stated. "I'm surprised at the aftermath of that night. The truth got blown away."
Assistant coach Lance Klusener also dismissed any tension between the owner and skipper, describing it as "a storm in a tea cup" similar to Langer's remarks. Klusener expressed no concern over what he considered a 'robust discussion' between two cricket enthusiasts.
Despite their recent loss, LSG remains in contention for the playoffs but must win their remaining two matches by a significant margin and hope other results favour them.
LSG will face Delhi Capitals on May 14 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi before playing Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 17 in their final league stage match.
