IPL 2024: Sangakkara On Respecting Umpire's Call In Samson's Controversial Dismissal

Rajasthan Royals' team director, Kumar Sangakkara, recently discussed the contentious dismissal of Sanju Samson during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals. The incident, which took place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on May 7, has sparked considerable debate among cricket enthusiasts and experts alike.

Samson, who was leading his team's chase with a stellar 86, was caught by Shai Hope near the boundary. The catch, however, was contested as replays suggested Hope's foot might have touched the boundary rope. Despite the controversy, the TV umpire upheld the on-field decision, ruling Samson out.

Sangakkara Talks IPL Dismissal Controversy

Sangakkara addressed the issue in a post-match press conference, acknowledging the complexity of the situation. "It depends on replays and angles. Sometimes, you think the foot has touched. It was a difficult one for the third umpire to judge; the game was at a crucial stage, but it happened," he explained.

The former Sri Lanka captain emphasized respect for the umpire's decision, despite differing opinions within the team. He also mentioned that the Rajasthan Royals would present the footage to the umpires for further clarity but praised Delhi Capitals for their performance towards the end of the innings.

"Of course, we will share it with the umpires, but I thought, irrespective of that, we should've seen the game home. Delhi played well. They were really smart with their bowling in the backend," Sangakkara remarked.

Highlighting the pressures faced by players and umpires alike, Sangakkara stated that they would follow official protocols to address their concerns. "Just asking what the procedure was and whether there was any doubt. The on-field umpire will have to go by what the TV umpire says. Players have to abide by it," he said.

Furthermore, Sangakkara pointed out that there are established means through which teams can express their opinions or concerns regarding umpiring decisions. "And there are means of conveying your opinion through direct conversation or the umpire's report. We follow protocol; there is a lot of pressure on players and umpires. We try to sort it in the best way we can," he concluded.

This incident has once again highlighted the challenges and pressures inherent in professional cricket, especially in high-stakes tournaments like the IPL. As teams navigate these challenges, respect for official decisions and protocols remains paramount.
