Understanding The Scheduled Break Before IPL 2024 Playoffs
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has now entered its business stage, with the final phase of the season set to commence on Tuesday.
As the group stages have concluded, four teams have advanced to the playoffs. Only four matches remain this season as we enter the playoffs.

Since the start of the season, the IPL has been a continuous process with games occurring daily. The regularity of the IPL has made it a part of people's routines during this time of year.
Today (May 20) marks a break in the IPL schedule as there are no matches. With the playoffs starting tomorrow, questions may arise about why there is a break today. Let's explain.
The break today is primarily due to logistical and players' travel reasons. Generally, the IPL playoff venue is determined based on last season's performance. The runners-up of the previous season host Qualifier 1 and Eliminator, while Qualifier 2 and Final are hosted by the defending champions' venue.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will play each other in Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad tomorrow (May 21). KKR and SRH had matches yesterday (May 19) in Guwahati and Hyderabad respectively. If Qualifier 1 was scheduled for today, the teams wouldn't even have 10 hours of rest before their crucial playoff match.
It would also have been a logistical and transportation challenge for the organisers to manage and accommodate the players. Therefore, there is a gap today. The two teams will reach Ahmedabad today and play the match tomorrow.
In an IPL season, the action is generally fast-paced. Matches take place daily, and over more than two months, there are only three days without a match.
| Day-Off | Description |
|---|---|
| Day-Off 1: | The day between the final group stage match and Qualifier 1 |
| Day-Off 2: | The day between Eliminator and Qualifier 2 |
| Day-Off 3: | The day between Qualifier 2 and Final |
These are the three allotted days in an IPL season without matches. As we now understand the reason behind Day-Off 1, it is almost the same for Day-Off 2. The winning team of the Eliminator requires time for their Qualifier 2 match as it also involves travelling to a new venue.
The day before the Final match is another off day due to broadcasting commitments, press conferences, and other engagements. Additionally, it is necessary for teams to have a day's rest before playing in the Final.
