IPL 2024: Analysis Of Wickets Taken And Average Cost Per Wicket For All 10 Teams
The IPL 2024 concluded with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerging victorious over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 8 wickets, securing their third title. The other teams that reached the playoffs were Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Chennai Super Kings narrowly missed the playoffs after losing to RCB in the knockout game. Mumbai Indians had a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of the points table.

All ten teams invested heavily in bowlers during the IPL 2024 auction. However, not all investments yielded positive results. Here, we analyse the wickets taken and the average cost per wicket for each team.
The inaugural IPL champions provided the best value for their bowling attack. They took 90 wickets throughout the season, with an average cost per wicket of INR 29.20 lakh, the lowest among all teams. RR reached the playoffs but were eliminated by SRH in Qualifier 2.
Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR took a total of 102 wickets in 16 matches, with an average cost per wicket of INR 40.06 lakh. The franchise made history by signing Mitchell Starc for INR 24.75 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. Starc took 17 wickets in 13 games, while Varun Chakravarthy led with 21 wickets.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians finished last on the points table with just 8 points under Hardik Pandya's captaincy. Despite this, they got value for their investment in bowlers, taking 80 wickets at an average cost of INR 49.22 lakh per wicket.
Lucknow Super Giants
LSG took 67 wickets this season, with an average cost per wicket of INR 64.17 lakh. Under KL Rahul's leadership, they finished seventh on the table with 14 points and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Gujarat Titans
The Ahmedabad-based franchise also took 67 wickets, with an average cost per wicket of INR 65.83 lakh. After being runners-up in IPL 2023, they failed to make an impact this season and finished eighth on the points table with 12 points under Gill's captaincy.
Punjab Kings
PBKS took a total of 94 wickets this season, with an average cost per wicket of INR 86.48 lakh. Harshal Patel, who was bought for INR 11.75 crore, won the Purple Cap by taking 24 wickets.
Delhi Capitals
DC took a total of 92 wickets across the season, with an average cost per wicket of INR 97.43 lakh. Under Rishabh Pant's captaincy, they finished sixth on the points table with 14 points and did not qualify for the playoffs.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
RCB invested heavily in bowlers but did not get sufficient returns. They took a total of 81 wickets this season at an average cost of INR 156.10 lakh per wicket. They qualified for the playoffs but were eliminated by RR in the Eliminator.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Orange Army took 79 wickets this season, with an average cost per wicket of INR 169.44 lakh. Pat Cummins was their most expensive signing at INR 20.5 crore and took 18 wickets in 16 games. SRH reached the finals but lost to KKR.
Chennai Super Kings
CSK had the highest average cost per wicket at INR 227.77 lakh, taking a total of 76 wickets across the season. They did not get enough value from their investment in bowlers during the IPL 2024 auction.
