SA20 2025: Potential New Avenue For Unsold Indian Cricketers At IPL Mega Auction
Dinesh Karthik recently made headlines by becoming the first Indian cricketer to join the SA20 tournament. He will play for Paarl Royals, a sister franchise of Rajasthan Royals, in the 2025 season.
At 39, Karthik believes he can still perform well as a wicketkeeper and finisher. The Tamil Nadu-born player was signed by the Royals to replace Jos Buttler, who confirmed his absence for the next season.

The latest recruitment opens doors for more Indian players to explore global T20 leagues. Earlier this year, Karthik retired from Indian cricket and left Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
Ajinkya Rahane has struggled with consistency while playing for CSK in IPL 2024. Despite a good run in IPL 2023, he managed only 242 runs in 13 games at an average of 20.17 and a strike rate of 123.47.
With increasing competition for IPL spots, especially from younger players, Rahane might not get bids in the upcoming auction. If unsold, SA20 could be a great platform for him to continue playing at a high level.
Shikhar Dhawan was once a key player at the top order for both India and IPL teams. However, his form has declined over recent years, suggesting he may be nearing the end of his career.
Dhawan suffered a shoulder injury against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024, leading Sam Curran to captain Punjab Kings in most games. If unsold at the next auction, Dhawan should consider retiring from IPL to play in South Africa's premier T20 competition.
Manish Pandey has been seen as a talented middle-order batter but has struggled with consistency. This inconsistency might make it hard for him to attract interest at the IPL 2025 auction.
Pandey played just one game for KKR last season, scoring 42 runs before spending most of the season on the bench. At 34, he still has some good cricket left and should consider joining SA20 if unsold at the IPL auction.
Karthik's move could inspire other Indian players to explore opportunities in global T20 leagues like SA20. This shift might offer them new avenues to showcase their skills and extend their careers beyond domestic leagues.
