Indian Cricketers Wear Black Armbands In Tribute To David Johnson At T20 World Cup

Bridgetown (Barbados), Jun 20: The Indian cricket team paid a solemn tribute to former fast bowler David Johnson during their T20 World Cup Super Eight match against Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval on Thursday (June 20). Players wore black armbands to honour Johnson, who tragically passed away after falling from his fourth-floor balcony in Bengaluru.

Johnson, who represented India in two Tests in 1996, died on Thursday. Local authorities are investigating the incident to determine if it was a case of suicide. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the team's gesture just before the start of the game.

Tribute to David Johnson at T20 Cup

Both India captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli were seen wearing black armbands as they came out to bat, marking their respect for the late cricketer. The cricketing community has expressed deep sorrow over Johnson's untimely demise.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar led the tributes, stating on X (formerly Twitter), "Deeply saddened by the passing of my former teammate, David Johnson. He was full of life and never gave up on the field. My thoughts are with his friends and family."

Former Indian bowlers and Johnson's Karnataka teammates Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble also shared their condolences. Prasad wrote, "Shocked and sad to hear about the passing away of David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti."

Kumble expressed his sorrow, saying, "Saddened to hear the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon 'Benny'!"

Johnson's brief international career included a Test match each against Australia and South Africa, where he claimed three wickets. In domestic cricket, he was a notable performer for Karnataka, securing 125 wickets in 39 First-Class matches and 41 wickets in 33 List A games from 1992-93 to 2001-02.

The cricketing community continues to mourn the loss of a player remembered for his spirit and dedication on the field. As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death, tributes pour in from across the globe, reflecting the impact Johnson had on those who knew him.
