Riyan Parag And Abhishek Sharma Make Debuts For India In T20I Series Opener Against Zimbabwe

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to field against Zimbabwe in the first T20I at Harare Sports Club on Saturday, July 6. This match saw three players making their debut for India: Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma, and Dhruv Jurel.

Parag and Abhishek earned their spots in the national team after an impressive IPL 2024 season. Both players showcased their batting prowess, with Parag scoring 573 runs for Rajasthan Royals and Abhishek accumulating 484 runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Notably, Abhishek hit the most sixes in the tournament with 42.

Parag, Sharma Debut in IND-ZIM T20I

Among the debutants, Parag and Abhishek are playing for the senior team in any format for the first time. Dhruv Jurel, who has already represented India in Tests, is making his T20I debut. Parag received his India cap from his father, adding a personal touch to his milestone.

The absence of seniors from the T20 World Cup-winning squad has opened opportunities for new players on this Zimbabwe tour. The newcomers aim to secure their places in the team by delivering strong performances.

Jurel's inclusion was anticipated after it was announced that Sanju Samson would join the squad after the first two T20Is along with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube. In their absence, Sai Sudharsan, Harshit Rana, and Jitesh Sharma were added to complete the 15-member squad.

After opting to field first, Gill commented: "I think it looks like a good surface. It won't change much later. It has been long coming. We won an ICC event after 11 years. You always have some expectations from yourself. We have three debutants. Sharma, Jurel and Parag make their debuts."

Zimbabwe's captain Sikandar Raza shared his thoughts: "I don't mind batting first. The wicket looks good. Zimbabwe cricket has trusted me with this transition phase. I look for young boys to come out and fight. It is humbling to lead this bunch. Sean has retired. It is a young side. Ervine will have a role in future."
