India Vs Zimbabwe T20I 2023: Five Star Performers Left Out Of Squad
The BCCI revealed a 15-member squad for India's five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, starting on July 6 in Harare. Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain in the absence of senior players.
Several players, including Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Nitish Reddy, and Tushar Deshpande, received their first call-up to the national team. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson are the only members from India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad traveling to Zimbabwe.

India's T20 World Cup 2024 reserves—Gill, Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed—are part of the squad. The team also includes Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mukesh Kumar.
India squad for T20I series vs Zimbabwe: Shubman Gill (Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande.
BCCI's senior selection committee had a wealth of talent to choose from despite resting many senior players. Consequently, several deserving performers were omitted from the squad.
- Tilak Varma: Mumbai Indians' Tilak Varma was a surprising omission. He was MI's second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2023 after Rohit Sharma. Varma was part of India's last bilateral T20I series in January against Afghanistan and made his ODI debut at Asia Cup 2023.
- Harshit Rana: Delhi pacer Harshit Rana plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He was expected to be picked for the Zimbabwe series but missed out. Rana was the joint fourth-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2024 with 19 wickets at an average of 20.15.
- Sai Sudharsan: The southpaw led Gujarat Titans in runs during IPL 2024. He scored 527 runs at an average of 47.90 and a strike rate of 141.28. Sudharsan made his ODI debut in South Africa last year and scored two fifties in three matches.
- Yuzvendra Chahal: The experienced leg-spinner had another successful IPL season with 18 wickets. Despite being picked for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 squad, he hasn't played a single game. Chahal does not have a central contract and has been excluded again.
- Varun Chakravarthy: The leg-spinner was crucial for KKR's IPL 2024 win with 21 wickets at an average of 19.14 and an economy rate of 8.04. Only Harshal Patel took more wickets than him this season.
The selection committee had to make tough choices due to the abundance of talent available. This resulted in some notable exclusions despite impressive performances in recent tournaments.
