Gautam Gambhir Advises Indian Batsmen On Spin Ahead Of Crucial ODI Against Sri Lanka

India is preparing for the third ODI to avoid their first bilateral series loss to Sri Lanka since 1997. All-rounder Washington Sundar spoke at a press conference on Tuesday, August 6.

The Indian batting line-up has struggled despite good starts from the openers. In the first ODI, India managed a tie after Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill's 75-run partnership but were bowled out for 230.

Gambhir's Tips on Spin for India

In the second ODI, the openers contributed 97 runs, yet India was all out for 208 while chasing 241. Sri Lankan spinners took nine wickets in each match, with part-time spinner Charith Asalanka claiming six wickets across both ODIs.

Washington Sundar mentioned that new head coach Gautam Gambhir is advising players on handling spin bowling in challenging Sri Lankan conditions. Sundar emphasised that batters need to find individual strategies and make tactical adjustments to counter Sri Lanka's quality spin attack.

"It's just about finding the way individually and get the job done. A lot of inputs from Gautam Gambhir about how to counter spin in these conditions. He was an excellent player against spin. A bit of change tactically," Washington Sundar said ahead of the third ODI in Colombo on Wednesday, August 7.

The young cricketer added that winning the third ODI would boost their confidence for future matches under similar conditions. Notably, Sri Lanka will co-host the T20 World Cup 2026 with India, and there is a possibility of India playing their Champions Trophy 2025 matches in Sri Lanka.

Upcoming Tournaments

India played their Asia Cup 2023 matches in Sri Lanka after refusing to travel to Pakistan. Pakistan is also set to host the Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March next year.

"This is a big opportunity for all of us to win this game as we know in such spin friendly conditions against a quality attack, it will help us for bigger tournaments," the Tamil Nadu star said.

Sundar's Performance

Washington Sundar also discussed his impressive bowling performance in Sri Lanka. He took four wickets, including two in the Super Over of the final T20I against Sri Lanka. He performed well in the first ODI and recorded figures of 3/30 in the last match.

"I am always someone who works hard and tries to be an asset for the team. While bowling, when I am in rhythm, the ball comes out of the hand well," the off-spinner said.

Winning this crucial match could significantly impact India's preparation for upcoming major tournaments hosted by or involving Sri Lanka.
