KL Rahul Chosen Over Rishabh Pant For India's 1st ODI Against Sri Lanka
KL Rahul was chosen over Rishabh Pant for India's playing eleven in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo on August 2. Pant had returned to the ODI squad after an 18-month hiatus, having last played in November 2022 before a severe car accident in December sidelined him for nearly 14 months.
Rahul, who served as India's wicketkeeper-batter during the Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup 2023, performed exceptionally well. He was the eighth-highest run-scorer in the World Cup 2023. Shreyas Iyer also made a comeback to the team after being dropped from BCCI's central contract list.

The top order features captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. Both Rohit and Kohli are returning to action for the first time since India won the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 29 in Barbados. Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh are the specialist pacers, with support from Shivam Dube if required.
Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube were selected over Riyan Parag. Sundar will be part of the spin attack alongside Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. This combination aims to provide a balanced bowling attack for India.
Sri Lanka's captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and opted to bat first. He announced that pacer Mohamed Shiraz would make his debut in this match. Injuries ruled out Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka on the eve of the ODI series.
The Sri Lankan playing eleven includes Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (wicketkeeper), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka (captain), Janith Liyanage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Akila Dananjaya, Asitha Fernando, and Mohamed Shiraz.
