T20 World Cup 2024: Aakash Chopra Questions India's Readiness For Tournament

Former cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra has raised concerns about Team India's preparations for the T20 World Cup 2024. With the tournament opener against Ireland on June 5 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, Chopra questioned the team's readiness, particularly regarding the openers and finishers.

Despite being labelled as favourites for the tournament held in the USA and West Indies, Chopra believes India is underprepared. "Are India underprepared for yet another T20 World Cup? Aren't we still figuring out our batting line-up? Who is the opener and the finisher?" he asked on his YouTube channel.

India's T20 Cup 2024 Prep Questioned

India is likely to open with senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to play the finishers' role. However, Chopra feels it is crucial to finalise the playing XI before the tournament begins.

"Yes, India likes a left-right combination but are almost certain to go with two right-handers: Rohit and Kohli. Rishabh Pant will likely bat at No. 3, followed by Suryakumar Yadav," Chopra added. "Then Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. There are a lot of left-handers. But my question remains, why are we getting to know about this now?"

Chopra also highlighted the lack of involvement from senior players since the last T20 World Cup in 2022. He stressed that players should have been informed about their roles well ahead of the tournament.

"Since the end of the last T20 World Cup in 2022, we have been playing with almost the same XI and batting order. So, what have we changed? And the roles that have changed, none were informed about it," Chopra said.

Concerns Over Opening Slot

While acknowledging individual brilliance in the team, Chopra pointed out how many players have been tried in the opening slot between the last two T20 World Cups.

"We do have individual brilliance, but what happened last time was that we created a scene around the opening position. Between the World Cup in UAE and Australia, we tried so many options for the opening role," Chopra stated.

"But eventually, we opened with Rohit and Rahul, Kohli at 3...absolutely no use. That came back to haunt us. It's an early warning, but we haven't prepared well."

Chopra's comments reflect a broader concern about India's strategy and preparation for major tournaments. As India gears up for their T20 World Cup campaign, these questions remain critical for their success.
