India To Unveil T20I Squad For Zimbabwe 2024 Tour: Captaincy Surprises Expected

India's T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe will be selected by the Ajit Agarkar-led men's senior selection committee on Sunday, June 23. Team India is scheduled to play five T20Is against Zimbabwe.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already collected the passports of some Zimbabwe-bound players, indicating an official announcement will likely follow the same day. The series will take place in Harare, featuring a new-look Indian side as the regulars are expected to be rested due to their heavy workloads. The series will start on July 6 and conclude on July 14.

India's T20I Squad for Zimbabwe: Surprises Ahead

With the regular stars likely to be given a break, India's squad for the Zimbabwe series will feature several new faces, particularly in the pace department. The seam attack might see a significant influx of left-arm quicks. If Arshdeep Singh is not rested, the squad could boast as many as three left-arm pacers.

Khaleel Ahmed, who is currently travelling with the 2024 T20 World Cup squad as a reserve, is set to make the trip to Zimbabwe. Uttar Pradesh seamer Yash Dayal, who impressed during the IPL 2024 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), is another strong contender for the squad. Discussions are also ongoing about including Mukesh Kumar, with the final decision pending based on the squad's balance.

Avesh Khan, part of the World Cup squad as a travelling reserve and recently released after the US leg, is a certainty for the Zimbabwe tour. Similarly, Shubman Gill, who was released after the India vs Canada fixture, is expected to join the squad directly in Zimbabwe, bypassing a return to India.

Given India's packed T20 schedule, featuring as many as 20 T20Is over the next 12 months, the management is considering resting key players like Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the Sri Lanka tour starting later in July. This potential rest period for senior players opens the door for leadership opportunities within the squad.

India Squad For Zimbabwe To Have Potential Captaincy Surprise

With Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav likely to be rested, there could be a surprise in terms of captaincy for the series against Zimbabwe. The selectors and management are contemplating their options, which might see a young or relatively new player leading the side for the first time.

Expected Squad Announcement on Sunday

The official squad announcement is anticipated on Sunday, with the BCCI finalising and revealing the names of the players set to travel to Zimbabwe. The focus will be on selecting a balanced team that combines experience with youthful exuberance, providing a platform for emerging players to shine.
