Suryakumar Yadav stepped in to lead India in T20Is when Rohit Sharma took a year-long break from the format. He continued in this role after Pandya's injury during the ODI World Cup 2023 until Rohit returned just before the T20 World Cup 2024.

According to The Indian Express, Suryakumar's leadership style has been well-received by both players and management. Although he is not a regular in India's ODI and Test squads, giving him the T20I captaincy could be a strategic move.

A BCCI source told The Indian Express, "It is a delicate matter. There is an argument on both sides of the debate and thus everyone is not on the same page. Hardik's fitness is an issue but he played a big role in breaking India's ICC jinx. As for Suryakumar, we have received feedback from the team that his captaincy style was well received by the dressing room."

Gautam Gambhir's Influence

The newly-appointed coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir, will also play a crucial role in this decision. His tenure begins with the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, making his input vital for determining Rohit's successor.

Both Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav have played together for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024 alongside Rohit Sharma. This familiarity could influence their potential leadership roles within Team India.
