Senior India Cricketers To Take A Break For Sri Lanka Series
India's cricket team is currently engaged in a T20I series against Zimbabwe, featuring many young and fringe players. The main squad members are on leave following their T20 World Cup victory.
The next assignment for the Indian team is a tour to Sri Lanka, where they will play three ODIs and three T20Is. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to rest key senior players for this series.

According to the Indian Express, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah will not be part of the squad for the Sri Lanka tour. The BCCI has decided to extend their break after the World Cup triumph.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from T20Is post-World Cup, while Jasprit Bumrah continues in the format. The selection committee will meet next week to finalise the team for the upcoming series.
A BCCI source stated, "Senior players can take some rest and get ready for the full cricket season ahead. Rohit, Virat, and Bumrah have been offered rest and will join the team for the Test matches against Bangladesh in September."
Future Series and Coaching Changes
This break aims to ensure these players are fresh for future matches. After the Bangladesh series in September, India will host New Zealand from October 16 to November 5 for three Tests. Following that, they will travel to South Africa for four T20Is before heading to Australia.
Gautam Gambhir is expected to become the new head coach of the Indian team. The announcement has been delayed due to ongoing salary negotiations between him and the board. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Gambhir would join from the Sri Lanka series.
Coaching Staff Decisions
Gambhir is likely to have significant freedom in choosing his support staff. There is uncertainty about appointing a batting coach since Gambhir himself was a successful opening batsman across formats. He also mentored Kolkata Knight Riders during their title-winning IPL season in 2024.
The BCCI's decision to rest senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah reflects their strategy to manage player workload effectively. This approach ensures that key players remain fit and ready for crucial fixtures later in the year.
