Shubman Gill Likely To Captain India In Zimbabwe T20Is With IPL Stars Set For Debut

Shubman Gill is poised to lead the Indian cricket team in the T20I series against Zimbabwe if Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav decide to rest. The five-match series is scheduled to commence on July 6 in Harare.

The senior selection committee of the BCCI wants Hardik and Suryakumar to take a break following India's campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, which concludes on June 29, according to The Indian Express.

Gill Set to Lead India in Zimbabwe T20Is

Several IPL stars are expected to make their debut for India in the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Players like Abhishek Sharma (SRH), Riyan Parag (RR), Nitish Reddy (SRH), and Harshit Rana (KKR) are likely to receive their first India call-up, as per reports. CSK pacer Tushar Deshpande is also a strong contender. Additionally, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, T Natarajan, and Varun Chakravarthy might be considered.

The BCCI has already selected a provisional 20-member squad but is awaiting confirmation from Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav before finalising the team.

With the appointment of the next Indian cricket team coach still pending, NCA head and former India batter VVS Laxman will travel with the team as the coach. The new coach is expected to assume duties from India's tour of Sri Lanka later in July.

Most players involved in the T20 World Cup 2024 are likely to be rested due to their continuous cricketing schedule since the year's start. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, who have been benched during the ICC event, are expected to be included in the squad.

Rinku Singh, currently travelling with Team India as a reserve player, is almost certain to secure a spot. Khaleel Ahmed, another travelling reserve with the Indian team in West Indies, is also likely to be included. Meanwhile, two other reserves, Gill and Avesh Khan, returned to India after the group stage of the tournament.

The inclusion of these players aims to provide them with valuable international experience while giving some regulars much-needed rest. This strategy ensures a balanced approach towards player workload management and team performance.

This upcoming series against Zimbabwe offers an excellent opportunity for emerging talents from IPL to showcase their skills on an international platform. It also allows seasoned players like Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav time to recuperate before future commitments.

The Indian cricket team's preparation for this series reflects a strategic blend of nurturing young talent while managing the workload of established players. This approach aims at maintaining peak performance levels across all formats and tournaments.
