Shubman Gill Leads Young India Squad To Zimbabwe For T20I Cricket Series

The Indian cricket team, led by Shubman Gill, departed for Zimbabwe early on Tuesday, July 2. They are set to play a five-match T20I series starting on July 6 in Harare.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have retired. Senior players like Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested. This series will see Shubman Gill leading a young Indian squad in Zimbabwe.

Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Tushar Deshpande are poised to make their T20I debuts for India. Nitish Reddy was initially included but had to withdraw due to injury. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube are the only members from the T20 World Cup 2024 squad in this 15-member team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared pictures of the team’s departure on social media. "Jet Set Zimbabwe," BCCI captioned the images featuring acting coach VVS Laxman along with players Abhishek Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, and Ravi Bishnoi.

Zimbabwe is aiming to rebuild under new head coach Justin Sammons after failing to qualify for the recent T20 World Cup 2024. They have opted for a youthful squad led by experienced batter Sikandar Raza.

Sikandar Raza was named captain of a young Zimbabwe side on Monday. The squad also includes Belgium-born Antum Naqvi, whose final inclusion depends on his citizenship status confirmation.

Naqvi was born in Brussels to Pakistani parents and later moved to Australia. He expressed his desire to represent Zimbabwe in international cricket and applied for naturalisation.

Gill, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, and Rinku Singh were travelling reserves for India during the T20 World Cup 2024. All four will feature in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe led by Sikandar Raza.
