India Contemplates Sri Lanka's Spin Strategy To Avert Series Defeat
India faces a challenging situation after losing the second ODI against Sri Lanka by 32 runs. The first match ended in a tie, and if India loses the third match on Wednesday, it will be their first bilateral ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka since 1997.
Sri Lanka's captain Charith Asalanka, a part-time off-spinner, has taken three wickets in both ODIs. In the first ODI, India’s openers built a 75-run partnership, but nine wickets fell to spin later. The match ended in a tie as India failed to chase down 231 on the spin-friendly surface of R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

In the third ODI, Asitha Fernando was Sri Lanka's only pacer. Despite injuries to Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, Sri Lanka had five bowling options. On the other hand, India played with two specialist pacers and Shivam Dube as a third seam-bowling option. They also had three proper spinners: Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, along with part-timer Rohit Sharma.
India's streak of ten consecutive bilateral ODI series wins against Sri Lanka ended after the hosts trapped India's batting unit with their spin bowling. India was cruising at 97/0 before leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay took six wickets, reducing them to 208 all out.
Riyan Parag could be an option for India due to his impressive spin bowling in the T20I series. He picked up three wickets at an average of 20.67 and an economy rate of 6.48. Including him might follow Sri Lanka's model and provide an additional spin-bowling option.
India reduced Sri Lanka to 101/5 in the first ODI and 136/6 in the second before conceding over 100 runs on both occasions. A fourth spin-bowling option is something they might consider exploring.
If India decides to bring Riyan Parag into the playing eleven by following Sri Lanka's model, they might drop Shivam Dube. However, this could affect their batting depth under challenging conditions.
The trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar picked six of the nine Sri Lankan wickets in the second ODI. Rohit Sharma and Shivam Dube bowled just two overs each.
India needs to strategise carefully for the upcoming match to avoid their first bilateral series defeat against Sri Lanka since 1997.
