India Ends 11-Year Wait With Victory Over South Africa In T20 World Cup 2024
India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa by seven runs at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29. This victory ended India's 11-year wait for an ICC trophy.
South Africa, chasing a target of 177 runs, seemed poised for victory as they needed only 30 runs from the last five overs. However, India turned the game around dramatically to secure the win.

Virat Kohli's exceptional performance was pivotal. After India's semi-final win against England, captain Rohit Sharma predicted that Kohli would shine in the final. Kohli lived up to this expectation by scoring 76 off 59 balls, leading his team from a precarious position of three down for 34.
Kohli, who had scored just 75 runs in seven innings before the final, reached his first fifty of the tournament off 48 balls. He then accelerated with two fours and two sixes, helping India post their highest total in a T20 World Cup final.
The Indian pacers' exceptional death over bowling was another key factor. With South Africa needing just 30 runs off the last five overs and six wickets in hand, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya displayed remarkable composure under pressure.
Bumrah conceded only four runs in the 16th over, Pandya gave away four runs and took Heinrich Klaasen's wicket in the 17th over, Bumrah bowled a two-run 18th over with Marco Jansen's wicket, Arshdeep allowed four runs in the 19th over, and Pandya conceded eight runs while taking two wickets in the final over.
The turning point came when Klaasen hit Axar Patel for 24 runs in the 15th over but was dismissed on the first ball of Pandya's over. This shifted momentum towards India.
Suryakumar Yadav's stunning catch also played a crucial role. With South Africa needing 16 runs off the final over and David Miller almost hitting a six on the first ball, Yadav made an incredible running catch at long-off.
Yadav covered significant ground to his left and caught the ball using both hands. His momentum carried him past the boundary rope, but he smartly juggled the ball back into play before completing the catch inside the field.
If that ball had gone for a six, South Africa would have needed just ten runs off five balls with Miller on strike. Miller had previously scored a match-winning 59 not out against Netherlands during the group stage to help South Africa chase down a target after being four down for twelve.
This victory not only highlighted India's resilience but also showcased their ability to perform under pressure. The team's collective effort ensured they emerged victorious in a thrilling contest.
